Unlimited, Affordable Amniotic Cells for Regenerative Medicine

AmnioCam aims to provide a reliable, scalable supply of high-quality amniotic cells, revolutionising wound care, cosmetics, and research applications.

About

Who Are We?

AmnioCam is working towards an affordable, unlimited supply of high-quality amnion cells for clinical and research applications. From the Babraham Institute, we are a research team looking to advance regenerative medicine by ensuring consistent access to amnion cells for wound healing and research—making cutting-edge therapies more accessible.

Problem

The Challenge: Limited Supply and High Costs

Amniotic membranes are highly valued in tissue engineering and cell therapies for their anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, ability to promote tissue repair, and safety from tumorigenicity. However, current amnion-based products face challenges like limited supply, high cost, and variability, restricting broader use. Developing scalable, consistent sources of human amniotic epithelial cells is essential to advance their clinical and research applications.

Our SOLUTION

Scalable, Cost-Effective Amniotic Cells

Dr. Peter Rugg-Gunn and Dr. Maria Rostovskaya from the Babraham Institute developed a novel method to produce amniotic epithelial cells from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). This innovation provides a reliable, scalable, and cost-effective alternative to donor placenta-derived cells, which face supply and variability challenges. The hPSC-derived cells mimic the bioactive properties of natural amnion, offering significant potential in tissue repair and wound healing. This addresses an unmet need for consistent, standardized amnion cells in clinical and research applications.

Furthermore, the research team developed a method to produce hPSC-derived amniotic cells with bioactive properties matching placental cells. These cells express key amnion markers, ensure high purity, and can be cryopreserved or lyophilized for long-term storage while maintaining bioactivity. Their scalable, production process is suitable for clinical applications. Tests show these cells promote fibroblast proliferation and migration, essential for wound healing, and effectively aid repair in human skin models, highlighting their therapeutic potential.
